An essay on certainty, standards and why clients are never really buying software · they are buying the person behind it.

The Standard Is the Product.

People think they buy software. They do not.

They buy certainty. The certainty that the thing will work when it matters, that someone thought about the case nobody plans for, that the detail they did not check was checked anyway.

Every client I have ever worked with arrived with the same quiet question. Not "is this good?" · that is what they say out loud. The real question is "will this person let me down when I am not looking?"

The answer is not written in the proposal. It is written in the standard. The standard is what happens when nobody is watching: how the error states are designed, how the edge cases are handled, how the work behaves on the day the client's patience is already gone.

Most work fails at the standard, not at the idea. The idea is usually fine. Ambition is common. Presentation is common. What is rare is the refusal to ship the version that is merely acceptable.

I would rather release nothing than release a version I do not respect. That is not perfectionism. It is arithmetic · the market forgets a thousand good-enough things overnight and remembers one uncompromising thing for years.

This is why I move slower than people expect at the start and faster than they expect at the end. The standard is set early, in decisions nobody sees, and after that the work carries itself.

Be the standard, and the work sells itself.

Everything else is logistics.
